it’s raining, it’s pouring…

April 12th, 2010

This morning i was thinking about that song (“It’s raining, it’s pouring…”) as it uncharacteristically rained and I realized it’s really more about a concussion than it is about raining.

So is it April already?? a little birdie tells me you may or may not be able to find a painting by me produced as a limited edition print on Tiny Showcase tomorrow! And you may recognize it from over here! A portion of the proceeds from the print sales will benefit Project Wildlife, a wildlife rehabilitation non-profit here in San Diego that I have volunteered at.

New in the shop! Glass magnets of many sorts: like these and these & perhaps most exciting, my new collection of buttons produced by Badge Bomb over here! Some new giclee prints, t-shirts, and other fun things are new to the shop as well, enjoy!

Then, some upcoming events! On Sunday, April 25th I will be signing books & giving high fives at the LA Times Festival of Books at the Giant Robot booth (#360) from 3:00 – 4:30pm– More info over here on my facebook page! Then next month I will have some mini paintings in the Enormous Tiny Art show curated by Nahcotta in June, and a show with Kelly Tunstall in New York at Giant Robot in September. Good times.

Well this has become a very long update so now I’ll end it with a couple photos.
Thanks for keeping in touch!

Also, thought this would be fun to share…it’s an illustration from the vaults. I created it a few years ago for a project where different artists were asked to create a portrait of a different president! I got first dibs on Lincoln (I am, after all, originally from the land of lincoln / illinois…) There was a lot of runaround on the project and the ball was dropped by the person putting it together (hey, it happens), so my illustration never went to print, but I just found the file on my computer the other day, so here it is for you to see many years later! Enjoy!

land + air + water sneak peek

February 4th, 2010

Today is a really exciting day for me work-wise — I just received my advance purchase copies of my latest collaboration with Chronicle Books: The Land-Air-Water Triptych Journals! It’s a project I’ve kept a secret for awhile now and I am SO EXCITED to finally be able to talk about it and share a sneak peek! Before I get into posting the photos, here’s a link to purchase this from my shop… ok moving on!

I thought it’d be fun to do something inspired by old school composition books, so while they’re much more quirky and portable (4 x 5.5″) than a composition book, hopefully it will remind you of them as you take a look. I’m really proud of the artwork I created for these… I did nothing but eat, sleep and breathe these absurdly detailed paintings, and they turned out exactly as I hoped. It was just a project I loved working on, I hope that comes through…

The clear carrying case holds all three journals, folds up and is enclosed by an elastic band. I call this set the Land + Air + Water Triptych because each journal features a different animal / landscape: Bears/Land, Owls/Air and Octopi/Water. (and triptych means 3) Of course, my favorite part is a little secret when you open the inside cover of each journal…perhaps not as useful, but far more fascinating, than the kind you’d find in your average composition book.

’cause seriously…did you know a group of peacocks is called an ostentation?!!

I hope you enjoyed this little sneak peek! Speaking of sneak peeks, here’s another:  two miniature paintings I submitted for “Year of the Tiger” a show at Giant Robot in LA opening next Saturday, Feb 13 & benefitting an animal rescue.
